The Humble Administrator’s Garden
Suzhou’s largest classical garden, best at opening time when the lotus ponds are still and quiet.
苏州 · Destination
Nine UNESCO-listed gardens and a canal city that still moves at walking pace — half an hour from Shanghai by bullet train.

For more than a thousand years Suzhou was where China’s scholars and officials came to retire, and they built gardens to match: miniature landscapes of rock, water, pavilions and framed views. Nine of them are now UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The gardens are the reason to come, but the city around them is just as rewarding. Pingjiang Road follows a canal lined with teahouses and old residences; small workshops still produce the silk embroidery the city has been famous for since the Song dynasty.
Suzhou is an easy day trip from Shanghai, but staying one night lets you see a garden early in the morning and the canals after dark, when the day-trippers have gone.
Don’t miss

A slow boat along the canal, then tea and a ping-tan ballad in a riverside teahouse.

Watch artisans split a single silk thread into dozens of strands to stitch pictures as fine as paintings.
