Key takeaways
- Most big fairs use three venues: NECC in Hongqiao (west), SNIEC in Pudong (east) and the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center.
- Book hotels early — rooms near the venues sell out and prices rise sharply during fair weeks.
- Register as a trade visitor online with the organiser before you travel; it is often free for professionals.
- Taxi queues after closing time can be long: pre-book a car or take the metro.
Shanghai hosts some of the largest trade fairs in Asia, from the China International Import Expo (CIIE) every November to industry shows in machinery, automotive, food, textiles and hospitality. The city handles them well, but fair weeks put real pressure on hotels and transport. This guide covers the practical side.
Shanghai’s main exhibition venues
| Venue | Area | Getting there | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai), NECC | Hongqiao, west Shanghai | Metro Line 2 to Xujingdong; minutes from Hongqiao airport and railway station | One of the world’s largest venues; home of CIIE |
| Shanghai New International Expo Centre, SNIEC | Pudong, east Shanghai | Metro Line 7 to Huamu Road; about 30–40 min by car from Pudong airport | Hosts many large industry fairs |
| Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center | Expo area, Pudong | Several metro lines serve the Expo area | Riverside venue on the former 2010 Expo site |
| Shanghai Exhibition Centre | Jing’an, city centre | Metro to Jing’an Temple | Smaller shows in a landmark 1950s building |
Visas and registration
Many nationalities can now enter China visa-free for short stays, and these policies generally cover business visits as well as tourism. If your passport is not eligible, the exhibitor or organiser can usually provide an invitation letter for a business visa. Rules change, so check the current policy for your nationality before booking flights — we are happy to check for you.
Fair registration is done directly with the organiser, almost always online. Pre-registered trade visitors usually pick up their badge with a QR code and passport, which is much faster than registering on site.
Where to stay
- For NECC: the Hongqiao business district. Many hotels are within a short taxi or metro ride, and you can walk straight onto trains to Suzhou or Hangzhou afterwards.
- For SNIEC: around Huamu, Longyang Road or Lujiazui in Pudong.
- For the Expo centre: the Expo area or Lujiazui.
- Central Shanghai (People’s Square, Jing’an) is great for evenings, but budget 40–60 minutes each way to the outer venues at rush hour.
During the biggest fairs, hotels near the venues can fill months ahead. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, ideally with free cancellation.
Getting around in fair week
The metro is the most reliable option but very crowded at opening and closing times. Taxi queues at closing can exceed an hour; ride-hailing apps such as DiDi work with foreign cards and have English interfaces, but surge at the same moment. A pre-booked car with a driver who knows the venue gates is the least stressful choice, especially if you carry samples.
Money, phones and apps
- Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your foreign card before you arrive; almost all taxis, cafés and restaurants accept them.
- Google services, WhatsApp and many Western apps do not work on local Chinese networks. Most business visitors use international roaming or a travel eSIM.
- Bring plenty of business cards, ideally with a Chinese side, and save your hotel address in Chinese on your phone.
Working with an interpreter
An English-speaking interpreter-guide makes stand visits and supplier conversations far more productive. Send them your target exhibitor list and product notes the day before, agree how you want to be introduced, and keep technical negotiations or contract wording for a specialist interpreter.
Add a day of sightseeing
From the Hongqiao area, Suzhou is about 30 minutes by bullet train and Hangzhou under an hour. The water town of Zhujiajiao is only about half an hour by car from NECC. See our business travel services or the Zhujiajiao day trip.
